To get the absolute best performance and maximum lifespan out of your cylindrical diamond rod:

1. Let the Diamonds Do the Work: Avoid heavy downward pressure. Diamond abrasives cut aggressively on their own; applying too much pressure can prematurely dislodge the diamond particles from the steel core. Use light, sweeping strokes.

2. Use a Light Lubricant: While diamond rods can be used dry, applying a few drops of water or honing oil will suspend the metal swarf (steel dust), preventing the rod from clogging up and keeping your sharpening strokes feeling smooth.

3. Mastering Serrated Edges: When sharpening a serrated blade, mount the rod in your fixed angle system and work the 6mm rod exclusively on the beveled side of the serrations. Finish by lightly stroking the flat back of the blade with a flat stone to remove the final burr.
