Premium Damascus VG10 Sandwich Steel Billets – Pre-Hardened for Custom Makers
Every legendary knife begins with superior steel. Our Damascus Sandwich VG10 Steel Billet Blanks are engineered specifically for custom knife makers, DIY hobbyists, and professional bladesmiths who demand both elite cutting performance and breathtaking beauty.
Featuring a modern “San Mai” or sandwich style construction, these billets place a core of high-performance VG10 steel between layers of striking Damascus steel. The result is a blade material that takes a wicked edge, retains it through punishing use, and boasts a unique, wave-like patterned finish that makes your finished knives highly collectible.
Why These Billets Are the Ultimate Maker’s Choice
1. Pre-Hardened & Heat-Treated (58-60 HRC)
Heat treating is one of the most critical and easy-to-ruin steps in knife making. We’ve done the heavy lifting for you. These blanks arrive professionally heat-treated and tempered to 58-60 HRC. This gives you a blade with maximum hardness and edge-holding ability while remaining durable enough to prevent chipping.
2. The Power of VG10 Core Steel
At the heart of each billet is VG10, a premium Japanese-formulated stainless steel. Highly praised in high-end culinary and pocket knives, VG10 is enriched with carbon, chromium, cobalt, and vanadium. It achieves an incredibly fine, sharp edge that resists wear and holds up beautifully against rust and corrosion.
3. High-Contrast Damascus Cladding
The outer layers of the sandwich protect and reinforce the rigid VG10 core. These folded layers create a striking, high-contrast grain pattern unique to every single piece. Once shaped and etched, your knife will exhibit a flowing pattern that immediately signals hand-crafted quality.
4. Versatile Size for Diverse Projects
With a standard, workable thickness of 3mm, these blanks are perfectly sized for a wide range of creations. Shape them into everyday carry (EDC) folding blades, robust outdoor hunting knives, or precise, elegant kitchen utility knives.
Pro-Maker Etching Tips:
During profiling, grinding, and beveling, the friction and heat of your sander will make the outer Damascus pattern temporarily disappear. Do not worry—this is a normal part of the process.
-
Finish grinding and polish your blade up to your desired grit (ideally 800 grit or higher).
-
Clean the blade thoroughly with acetone to remove any oils or fingerprints.
-
Dip the blade into an acid etching solution (such as a 1:3 mix of Ferric Chloride and distilled water) for 5 to 10 minutes.
-
The acid will eat into the different alloy layers at varying speeds, bringing the gorgeous Damascus pattern back to life in high contrast!
